Nathan listened to the click of the connection cutting off, and he shook his head in dismay, shutting the phone and setting it down next to the liquor bottle. God, he really didn't need this right now. How was he supposed to be of any kind of help when he was still drinking himself?

Anyway, didn't she have a sponsor to call if she felt the urge to jump off the wagon?

Who was he kidding? Sympathy had never been one of Nathan's strong suits.

He doubted he could be of any real help to Niki; it was more like the blind leading the blind. That's probably why she'd hung up. She'd probably remembered mid-sentence just who it was that she was asking.

But if she really didn't have anyone else...

He dialed her back and finished dressing while he waited for her to pick up.
